Location

Whetstone, Leicester

Project

The old MOD, rail and transport site, believed to have been used for testing jet engines since 1930’s suffered a release of kerosene in the 70’s/80’s as well as subsequent use as a scrap yard and lorry parking area which resulted in contamination of the underlying Mercia Mudstone strata

Contaminant

Hydrocarbons (free phase and dissolved) posing risk to soils and groundwater.  Soil bound cement fibre asbestos.

Challenges

The former industrial site had existing foundation and underground services requiring removal and relocation. The site also sat adjacent to a SSSI and a RAMSAR site

Churngold Solution

The remedial scheme devised employed Steam Enhanced Remediation (SER) (steam injection and enhanced DPVE) to treat the groundwater. However, through additional investigation and further assessment of the ground conditions, the solution implemented was that of exsitu bioremediation of the clay soils and installation of a deep DPVE system
